Knowledge is power. Fear of the unknown is worse than the unknown itself. When you have an attorney you trust and that you can call anytime, it is simply easier to walk through the good and the bad, the surprise, and the slow building storm. I encourage you to find an attorney, preferably one you know or that is recommended to you, take advantage of their free consultation and develop that relationship. If the attorney doesn’t call you back within twenty-four hours, call another one.
In my 23 years of practicing law and providing legal advice to individuals including potential clients, clients, colleagues, friends and family members, the free consultations I provide have helped people sort through every day questions, larger concerns and new endeavors. Many times new clients call me and they are afraid to ask questions at first. Once they know that I offer a free consultation either by telephone or in person and that nothing they tell me I will tell anybody or judge, I usually can guide them easily and alleviate fears they have been carrying around a long time or give them guidance for a new endeavor.
Confidentiality is a powerful tool, use it. Find an attorney you feel comfortable with. That relationship can give you some room to move forward feeling more confident, less unsure, and an immediate place to turn when you need it. Every person has things that worry them, that they wonder about, that they fear, or topics of which they are unsure. The best thing I give my clients is a safe, trusted, confidential place to go when they need something. I am there for them whether it be once a year, or every day. My clients trust me and know that confidentiality laws protect what they tell me and I will always act to protect them.
These relationships take time and trust. Find that attorney and develop that relationship. Then, when you need advice or to put your mind at ease with some additional knowledge, reach out to that attorney. A simple phone call can help you make decisions, feel more confident, and weather any storm that comes your way.
