Choose the Right Divorce or Custody Lawyer
Are you are facing a divorce or need to fight for custody of your child(ren)? If so, you may be asking yourself, “how do I choose the right lawyer?” Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Identify your goals. Do you need someone who can help you obtain a low cost divorce by agreement? Or, do you need a lawyer who will go to court to prove that you need alimony or should receive custody of your children? Identifying your goals will help you determine which lawyer is right for you.
- Obtain referrals: Obtain names from friends and neighbors who have been through, or know someone who has been through, a divorce or custody case. Your clergy, therapist, personal doctor, or other local professionals may also be an excellent referral source for you.
- Research online: Most law offices have websites that will provide information about the legal process, in general, as well as information about an attorney’s background, experience and philosophy related to the type of case in which you are involved.
- Schedule consultations: Often attorneys offer initial consultations for free or a reduced cost. Be prepared to give a very brief description of your case and your goals then sit back and listen. You will learn a lot by letting the lawyer talk. Be sure to ask questions about cost, including how much of a retainer is required, whether the case would be subject to a flat fee arrangement or what happens if the case goes on longer than anybody anticipates.
The bottom line is that you need to choose a lawyer that makes you feel comfortable, that listens to your concerns and goals, and that explains things in a way that you understand. This is an emotional and difficult time in your life and good communication with the right lawyer will help make the process a lot easier.
